One of my laptop DVD drives recently started whining about its inability to read some CDs. After a bit of poking around with Google I have learned that my DVD drive features two lasers, one for DVD and one for CD. So I stuck in a DVD and lo and behold, it played happily. Interesting but unhelpful.
