interesting article in the NYT about the "War on Terrorism" and defeating terrorism in general. I have one minor nitpick, of course; the British did not, cannot, and are not "destroying" terrorist groups in Northern Ireland; rather, they are taking the second tack suggested, dialogue to remove the political reasons for the existence of the terrorist groups. On both sides, lest you think I'm some sort of a sympathizer. It's not 100% effective, but it's been far more successful than their previous policies, and the biggest risks to the process right now are from posturing politicians who are more concerned with how they appear to their constituents than they are with "increasing the peace" in Northern Ireland.

This was spectacular to watch, although probably terrifying for the driver who had to contend not only with an engine demolishing itself in a spectacular fireball a few inches behind him, but also with the fact that the car was doing in excess of 100MPH when this happened.
