I am The Finn, episode X in a series of N

In the past 24 hours I have had no less than three DC power supplies die on me. One killed off my 5-CD changer, which hasn't been used much since I ripped everything to MP3 a few years ago, so that's no great loss. The other two were the original PSU for the only decent non-laptop screen in the house - a 15" LCD, uncased -which died at some point since I last fired up said screen (or perhaps as I fired up said screen) and the other I had cannibalised from a 3com hub, but it couldn't handle the load and melted something vital internally after about an hour. So now I've solved the problem by resorting to my Finn-like heap of as-yet undiscarded junk, and rigging up the following gem:

To clarify this detailed yet detail-less photo: I have a generic AT power supply - in locating which, I discovered two more dead PSUs of the AT genre; onto one of the drive connectors, I've attached an extension whose sole purpose in life is to split out the 12V lines for some other device, probably a fan; onto that, I had long ago grafted a cigarette lighter socket, to allow me to use cigarette-lighter-driven toys at my desk; and onto that, I've attached through friction alone the power lead from the original LCD PSU. It's all working fine, and if the LCD can take out a 200W power supply I'll be pretty impressed.

Neat. I wish I got this much use about my random accumulation of junk. I think the main threat to this arrangement is the insulation coming off the joins.

The last time I put together something like this was for a replacement battery for my old incancescent headlight, using NiMH "D" cells. What eventually happened is that the connection to the headlight shorted and melted the plug out of shape.

Hahah. insulation.

(could you explain or link to The Finn and why a pile of random old crap is Finn-like?)

That'd be the guy with the cruft-laden house/shop (METRO HOLOGRAFIX) in Neuromancer.
