back on the block

I'm in Seattle - in the WAC, to be precise - and will be here for the next two weeks. I'm also currently expecting my luggage to arrive at some point. I am now regretting my quip to the check-in desk as I heaved my bag onto the conveyer: "Do you want it checked through to Seattle?", he asked, and I replied, "Sure. I don't want to see it again <wry chuckle>".

My cellphone battery crapped out, and currently I have no means of reviving it as it's not responding to the usual trick of USB connection to laptop. Of course, the laptop is currently running on battery anyway as I don't have an appropriate electrical adapter to hand. Both of these can hopefully be rectified by a short trip to the nearest consumer electronics store, assuming they're not closed up shop for Labor Day. Why do you celebrate Labor Day by not going to work, anyway?

I took great care to pick things off the breakfast menu at 2am-and-some this morning. I did not take such great care to mark the time at which I expected this repast to arrive on my doorstep. Thus, phonecall at 8:30am asking when I'd like it. At least I was already awake; I woke up around 7ish, which is the time I'd normally wake, so I've no idea what time my body actually thinks it is at this point.

The coffee with the breakfast was a bit unpleasant. This is surprising on two levels: firstly, this town is supposed to be the home of good coffee, and secondly, anyone who knows me will know that my main quality criterion for coffee is "does it have caffeine?" and the issue of how it actually tastes is rarely something that bothers me.

I asked for no newspaper. This apparently translates to "give me a copy of the Seattle PI".

The weather is... Dublin. I fear Broenwynn may fail on her mission to persuade me that there are mountains in the area.

Broen is in good form, and we had the usual wandering chat over a few beers. I think the niceties of "what have you been up to since 2006" (my last visit here) were already well covered by emails and about 5 minutes of conversation, so we could quickly get down to the business of being people who know each other well enough to discuss random crap instead.

Due to crap weather in London, I had multiple flight delays and one missed connection; the upshot of this is that I have No Luggage, as noted, except for the carry-on stuff (obviously including my precious MacBook). I am periodically reloading the luggage tracking website which helpfully informs me that my bag has not been located yet and they're using "all methods available" to find it. Which doesn't fill me with delight, really, since I got here 12 hours ago and I thought the whole point of putting a fricking BAR CODE on my bag was so that they'd be able to keep tabs on it. Oh well. At least they've promised to deliver it to the hotel rather than have me haul out to the airport to pick it up.

Ah, you clearly got the "asshole thinks he's being wry" special bag loss check.

Well, yes. It serves me right. Me and my big mouth, etc.

the game of "who's the joke on now, asshat?" is very common in airport personnel. It's also the "I'm making eight bucks an hour, but I'll make you suffer for it, cause I can" mentality.

We do the same thing, think of the next Mercedes driver that cuts you off and what you just wished on him. However, airport personnel are just better than us and we should accept it

Ah, cool I didn't know you were coming to the U.S.
