nutbar alert

46. The beheading and murder of United States Citizens in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and other countries have been videotaped, converted to MPEG and other images for viewing on the public Internet through the use of OSS and Linux software and computer technology developed and purloined by Linux and OSS members and illegally exported from the United States. Damn those MPEG-exporting, Linux-using OSS thieves and their support for global terrah!

Purloined?

Wait a minute, is there a law that says that Terrorists can only use Microsoft or something?

Check out the front page of the site. He cites Bruce Perens' reference to a kill file as a death threat.

Yep. All who fail to conform are Enemies who must be persecuted.

Or something like that.

I hate to be a language purist, but "purloined" means "stolen". How exactly can someone purloin open source software? Terrorists might be able to violate the terms of the GPL by appropriating code and distributing compiled binaries without source, but it doesn't sound like that's what's happening.

Well, first of all, Linux isn't a piece of software, it's an organization. Which Bruce Perens is president of. (These facts are alleged in the court document.) The purloining wasn't of Linux, it was done by Linux - terrorists and Linux members stole trade secrets and put them into open-source software.

[livejournal.com profile] mskala has given a more technical response to this. My own attitude is this: the guy is a nutbar, there is nothing to be gained from a detailed analysis of his choice of language. Well, not unless you are writing fiction and want one of your characters to be believably insane.

ITYA mispronouncing "terr."
