The Phoenix Park is the big grassy space occasionally referred to as The Forty Acres to the west of Dublin city centre. It's got an amount of road through it, dimly lit and poorly signposted (or not signposted at all, in places). That said, I used live fairly close to it and cycle around it a bit. Last night, in attempting to locate my friend John's new house - which is close to one of the Park exits - I managed to overshoot the gate I was looking for due to the aforementioned lack of lighting and signposting, and then I kinda lost track of where I was until I found myself at the Infirmary road exit. Further embarassment caused by then failing to accurately retrace my steps before finally finding John's house, which is indeed nice.
I only recently twigged (thanks to Hellblazer) that 'gaff', in addition to being a hook on a long handle and a penis-suppressing panty for crossdressers, means 'abode'.
