novell & linux, two great, ah, floorwaxes or something

So I am attending the Novell Brainshare conference in Barcelona next week. After some poking around I found the website (which at the time I found it was still referring to BrainShare 2003, even though the dates were all in 2004). It invited me to register, which required, among other things, the mandatory provision of a company fax number (sorry, we seem to have left our fax in, uh, 1984) and way too much demographic information. Sigh. I forged ahead.

"Click here", it said, "for the schedule".

*click*

"Click here", it continued, "to add this item to your personal schedule".

*click*

Hmm, that didn't work.

I had a look at the javascript; turns out it's IE-specific. Nice. So this morning I booted the laptop into Happy Bill Land and spent an hour fighting with the Automated Scheduler. Apparently the priorities attached to personal schedule items are irrelevant since it kept offering to reschedule low priority items instead of high priority ones. Plus, on the schedule conflict page, it referred to items by their catalogue code, e.g. TUT198. You could click on it to get a pop-up explanation, except that the javascript didn't. work. in. Internet. Explorer. Fortunately, you could also wait for the tooltip which contained the item title to pop up. Classy.

Having finally wrestled the schedule into some sort of non-conflicting shape, I decided the handiest thing would be to export it to my Palm Pilot.

None of the export options worked.

You know how you can generate a file on the fly and feed it down in response to a form query? This was generating a file on the fly, passing the URL of the file back as a link in a page, and when you clicked on that link you got a 404. Classy squared.

Eventually I managed to get a printout of the schedule and a copy emailed to myself for good measure. But seriously. What a load of crap!

Did you comlain to them, out of curiosity? I mean, the total Linux incompatibility of their own site is pretty poor biz.

Well, that just adds to the whining noises - I can't find any obvious link to complain to (i.e. no mailto:, no relevant form, etc.) - I'll just have to find some Novell head next week and complain vociferously in person.

The website, btw, claims to work with "Netscape 4 to 6" which means it should, by right, work with Mozilla.
