It ain't much, but I call it my target

5 miles, 40 minutes. I'm running in an actual race next month and this is exactly what I want to do, even if it only means (going by last year's times) that I'll be in the 600-700s of a 2000-entrant race. Even my 5k time was pretty much bang on 25 minutes. Hurrah for 5-minute kilometres!

Make it your personal race, not an actual race with all the others. You don't know what training regimes they have but I am pretty sure it's nothing to do with bent at precarious angles rebuilding machines when you should be stretching before running, or stretching after running rather than lying down flat on your face thanking your landlord for not getting the shagpile carpet which would have suffocated you by now.

OK it's in the high nineties here and my brain is melting.

What are you, my coach? Of course I'm making it my personal race... the lead runners finish in the sort of time that'd have me bursting a lung on the first k.
