A 72-year-old who smoked 100 cigarettes a year for many years dying of lung cancer doesn't seem very ironic, or very coincidental either. I vote for unfortunate.
This came up in the office today. I don't know that it happened while he was out jogging, but yes, he died of a heart attack. And there are rumours that Mr. Atkins, of the famed diet, was not exactly svelte at the time of his death, although these are unfounded as far as I know.
Of course, they're all just trailing after whoever it was that died after drinking Parisian water to demonstrate that it was potable (I'd have said W. C. Fields, except his water-related comment was "I never drink the stuff. fish fuck in it.")
Fixx died at the age of 52 of a massive heart attack, after his daily run, on Route 15 in Hardwick, Vermont. The autopsy revealed that cholesterol had blocked one coronary artery 95%, a second 85%, and a third 50%. Many who opposed his beliefs said this was proof running was harmful. However, it should be pointed out that Fixx came from a family where the men had poor health histories. His father suffered a heart attack at the age of 35 and died of one at 42. Given Fixx's unhealthy lifestyle until he took up running, many argued that running added many years to his life.
Dr. Atkins wasn't svelte at the time of his death, but that was because he'd been in a coma; he had some kind of fluid retention. Supposedly his pre-coma weight was healthy.
