Since I've been told so frequently that I sound American, I figured I'd have to try out that damned test that's been doing the rounds. The result:

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

Personally, I don't think you "sound" American, but you seem to use a fair number of American phrases and the like. I've occasionally been accused of something similar. I suspect that a lot of it stems from years of hanging around teedotbee and similar places, exchanging emails and "chatting" with Americans, and absorbing their figures of speech...
