stretching the fabric of reality


This is the old armoury in Phoenix Park. Note how the Google version is laterally elongated compared to the Mapflow one. I don’t know which is the accurate view, but I think it’s the Mapflow one; the armoury is, I think, intended to be shaped like a fivefour-pointed star sans distortion.

it looks like a perspective issue to me, but i don't claim to know a damn thing about satellite imagery.

Google uses what seems to me to be a modified equal-area projection, so everything is wider than it should be, especially the farther north you go.

Yeah. You're pretty far north up there. The projection problem was always going to be tricky given their "scroll as far as you like, we'll give you an illusion of flatness" user interface.
