what lj really needs is...

...scoring. Like the old t.b voting system (which I was hoping to resurrect, but that's a different story). That way, I can release the pent-up pressure from reading dorky followups by rating them "-57, Can't find own ass with both hands, a map, a friend, and a copy of Gray's Anatomy".

You would be my hero if you performed this community service.

You mean I'm not already your hero? Jeez.

I was harassing pv about getting the originals, which he said he had buried somewhere, but that was a few months back.

I hated scoring on t.b and would hate it here. This isn't a competitive sport, and it's not school. I'm not writing for ratings and not writing to be graded. All it will do is turn this into more of a popularity contest than it already is, and what good will that do?

Huh. t.b scoring for me (scorer or scoree) neved had anything to do with competetiveness. Looking at my own scores, it helped me figure out which pieces seemed to be enjoyed or apreciated by others, and this helped me think about why and make correlations between similar pieces and their similar results. It certainly didn't discourage me -- it helped gain another understanding of what I wrote. As a scorer, I hoped to help do the same for others. It was also nice to have a more merit-based suck metric -- it caused me to read some good posts written by people that populated my killfile. I miss it.

A fair comment. I can't say it's a genuine wish to have a public scorefile (akin to the old t.b voting system) for lj, although a personal scoring facility would be nice - the ability to simply disregard people who IMHO have never contributed anything worthwhile to any of the threads I've read. And I don't see this as a simple schoolyard "you're not in my gang"[1] thing, either. As a reasonable approximation of an adult, I feel I should be able to pick and choose who I pay attention to, particularly in my recreational time.

[1] It always was my gang. I don't ever recall wanting to be in someone else's gang in school. I'm sure this explains a lot.
