smug phoneness

In my little technological backwater where we use that pansy GSM protocol pretty much exclusively, I've never once owned a carrier-locked phone. In fact, I've happily swapped my two carrier "identities" (one personal, one work) between an Ericsson GA528, Ericsson SH888, Nokia 5100, Nokia Card Modem, and Siemens S45 - and that's just my own phones. I've also used my personal number in a rented phone in San Francisco and in various friends' phones when my own batteries died. I think the prepay phones - i.e. the ones where you don't have a minimum-duration contract that the carrier can use to recoup the €150 or so subsidy they apply to handsets - may have been carrier-locked when they first appeared, and may still be, but beyond that it's a free-for-all.

fwiw, our fones here are GSM but also carrier-locked, although people posting to Usenet periodically offer to unlock them for you.

"Here" being where, exactly?

Though there are GSM carriers in the US, most are not, and GSM coverage pretty much blows for anything outside of heavily-developed urban areas.

Using my amazing superpowers to look at [livejournal.com profile] zadcat's userinfo, i have determined she is in Montréal. And not just any Montréal, but the one in Québec, specifically.

Using my amazing powers of laziness, I didn't bother. In any case, I think what I said goes with a s/the US/North America/. Is GSM coverage actually functional in .ca?

Oh, and btw, using my amazing powers of good taste, I don't use a knock off South Park character as my ljpic. So there. ;^>

Dude. If you're going to be a lazy whiny-ass posting comments in my journal when I don't know you from the next gimpy moron with a webcam, please (a) refrain from pissing on my friends when they helpfully show you where the clue tree is, or (b) just, you know, fuck off. Or heck, go wild. Do both.

First, you do know me at least via IRC.

Second, note the smiley.

Third, I actually want to know about GSM coverage in Canada, and have actually investigated how inadequate it is in the US.

You're not just an irritating little monkey, you're slow, too. Let me help:

1. "you know me via IRC" - see previous statement regarding not knowing you from the next gimpy moron with a webcam.

2. "note the smiley" - see "fuck off". If you need to use a smiley you're already in trouble.

3. I'm sure anyone with half a braincell would have realised that I was referring to your unwillingness to check someone's userinfo to find out where they're located. You then mock the person who points this out to you, and in passing decide it's time to take a potshot at all three of the people in this thread by commenting on how your grainy webcam photo of you staring at your crotch hoping to find your dick is somehow in better taste than a self-portrait assembled from an element of popular culture with some thought and enough reference points to recognise the person to whom it applies. You are now on the bottom rung of the clueless ladder, and yet you're STILL trying to figure out how much further down you can go. Please give up before I have to start deleting your posts to save any passing members of the IT community the embarassment of realising you can be this dumb and still somehow operate a computer.

I don't use a southpark picture either, but I was still going to pick on his crappy one.

1. I wrote "here" because Waider knows where I live.

2. Yes, it is GSM and perfectly functional all over Canada.

3. My South Park figure is a true expression of my inner nature, so fuck off.

4. Do not taunt happy fun Irishman, because he can use the language far better than you can. Especially the vituperative bits.

You use a photo, and we have PhotoShop.
