more house

Ok, I've had a look around the area the prospective new house is in. No obvious "for let" signs, so I wasn't able to identify the exact house, but the potentials look reasonable. The houses look old enough to have been built with solid walls as opposed to whatever excuse for inter-house partitioning they use in a lot of places these days. There are no obvious boy-racer or banger cars, so that's good; plenty parking space; reasonably well connected in terms of routes to work and elsewhere. The front doors in the area are a bit ratty, but if I care enough about that I'm sure a dousing with paint would fix it. The advert says there's a patio and a rear garden, which means somewhere to leave the bike. Gas fire in the main room - yay! I love gas fires; all the benefits of an open fire with none of the hassle of a turf, coal or wood fire. Electric shower, which I've not had in any accomodation since, hmm. College. The only slight glitch is that the bedrooms are singles, and I've got a double futon. I may have to abandon it, or store it until further notice, depending on the dimensions of the rooms.

Ok, I'm already talking like I'm gonna move in. I still need to look the place over.

What is an electric shower? To these ears, it sounds dangerous. You're soaping your jewels, and zap.

I was about to ask the exact same thing, minus the jewels.

It's an appliance usu. wall mounted in the shower that turns cold water into hot. It is cheaper than a hot water heater because you don't have to keep a supply of hot water around constantly in case you want to take a shower and is also used (locality circa here) for refitting older houses that don't have hot water.

Sheesh, you canadians... it's a cold water pipe going into an electric unit which uses a thermostat-controlled mini-boiler to provide an instant hot shower. Normally supplied with a pump also to increase the water pressure. It's also an excuse for people like Argos to put naked people in their catalogue, although they seem to have cut that back a little lately. This is one of their fine, fine electric showers, for reference.

I'm also reminded that it never got cold enough for a fire while I was visiting, so I never found out what turf fires are like.

Guess I'll have to come back sometime.

Ooh, they have those for boats, although with diesel or propane burners providing the heat.

Nifty-keen.

There's no naked people on that page. Please URL another.

I'm sorry. Here you go: 1, 2, 3, and one for the ladies (or gents, as appropriate), 4.

the very idea of a bedroom too small to contain a double futon boggles the American mind. here one occasionally finds a bedroom too small for a king-size to reasonably fit, in really old buildings.

you european types are wacky.

That we are. Dammit. And mighty proud of it, too.
