some thoughts on The Dark Knight
I saw The Dark Knight last night, and as noted in t'other journal, I found it pretty much to be a faultless movie. However, there was one thing that I thought could've been improved upon: the Two-Face makeup. The thing about Christopher Nolan's two Batman movies is that by and large they're set in the real world. The technology is believeable, people aren't superheros - Batman gets cut, bruised, winded, disoriented, etc. - and in general you're looking at a pretty extreme but plausible version of our world. Two-Face throws that out the window completely, and winds up being somewhat cartoonish instead of scary. It's a shame; the Joker was just so well done this time around (I think it was Michael Caine who said that Nicholson's Joker is sort of like your misbehaving uncle, while Ledger's Joker is just an out-and-out scary psychopath), and Batman's mortality was delved into even further, and then you've got a guy who's got so much burnt skin that his eye should be a glazed blob and instead it's somehow swivelling around inside half a face that doesn't appear to have enough muscle to support it.
Aside from that, though: hell of a movie. Go see it.
