I don't think somebody who creates something should have their rights violated. Yet we have a culture in which creating something like [Danger Mouse's] The Grey Album can get you thrown in jail. That's sad. It's an astonishing, amazing piece of work that should be heard. (link)

Unfortunately, the collary is that if you adapt "traditional" stories, etc. or buy up creative outlets, and also lobby the American congress heavily, you can preserve your copywrite for life plus X number of years now. Disneycorp was a major mover behind getting copywrite protection extensions on the books; it means lots of resources for stuff like genealogy and history won't be able to get put on the web as a shared resource for a LOT longer.
