further adventures in reverse-engineering

I got some help from the owner of a device that differs from mine, and for which Sony provides a slightly different version of the MP3FileManager drag-and-drop toy, and between us it appears we've figured out how to get my MPLE code to work with his NW-E55. There are still some rough edges on the code and I'm waiting for confirmation from him that it actually works, but hurrah, and down with the Man, and all that crap. Actually from poking at Sony's downloads page, it would appear that supporting the E55 buys me support for another half-dozen devices for free.

I just bought a sony network walkman NW-E105 (NW-E1xx series) today and was quite pissed off to learn that it's entirely useless unless you run Windows. Luckily I happen to run Windows, but let's say I decide not to (I've been switching back and forth between WinXP and Debian Linux for a couple years now) ... It'd be nice to be able to use my mp3 player I just paid Sony $140 for.

Anyway if there's stuff you'd like me to test, send me an instant message (view my profile) or just reply to this... :)

BTW found your journal from a link on some site that mentioned your initial research efforts. Not slashdot..

Looks like that uses the v2 MP3 File Manager, which I've only done a little investigation of as it seems to work a lot harder at obfuscating the files. I think I should be able to get away with just using Sony's software to generate test files, but if I need further samples I'll get in touch.
