turns out that while Oracle's installer blows rancid goats when run on machine A with $DISPLAY set to machine B, over ssh, with fvwm2 as the window manager on machine B, it works perfectly well when run on machine A with $DISPLAY set to a locally-running VNC server using twm as the window manager.

Used be that the selling point of X was network transparency, I thought?
