It's a B-movie version of Heart of Darkness, though I don't think it's likely to be confused with Apocalypse Now.
The "unquestionably incompetent student" is played by actress who played the love interest in Return of the Killer Tomatoes (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095989/). "They are gardeners and carpenters, they are not tomato men."
It's actually a remake of "Heart of Darkness", only it takes place in the Southern California avocado groves, and involves a women's studies grad student looking for her feminist professor who disappeared while studying the dreaded "cannibal women". It's not too bad, for that sort of movie.
