indulging my bad habits

Dear Cory,
Many of us have DVD players that are region-locked per the idiocy foisted on us by the DVD CCA and the compliant manufacturers. And so in order to get around this stupidity, we've flashed the players. And every single flasher I've encountered comes with the original flash files so I can restore my player in the event that I need to indulge in warranty-abuse. But really, if your supplier's being such a bitch, why do you buy their stuff? Seems to me that not buying from someone makes a far more concrete statement than simply whining about it. (link)
Love,
Waider.

(Never mind the larger issue of, well, if you're so set against the DVD implementation details, why do you have such a large collection?)

Maybe because you like movies?

But that's exactly the point I'm making. It costs me nothing personally to whine about the behaviour of DVD-producing companies. It certainly costs them nothing to endure the whining. On the other hand, if I (and, well, obviously, enough other people) choose to stand up for their consumer rights over their desire to own the ultra-super-director's-fantabulous-special-edition cut of The Matrix, it might conceivably have some sort of effect.

Standing on a soapbox and crying over the fact that you can't watch your 200-disc collection which you purchased in the full knowledge that this would be the case (regardless of Apple's policy, the 5x5 limit exists for most firmware I've encountered, as do firmware patches to get around it) is hypocritical, plain and simple. Not to mention petulant, given that you can pick up a multi-region DVD player in these parts for less than the price of a good DVD boxed set.

Also, obviously, I have a personal vendetta against Cory.

Your vendetta is noted. Personally, I think that Cory's heart is often in the right place despite his occasional petulance.

I think this article is quite a study of the quixotic nature of the LoyalAppleFan -- at once demonstrating his fondness for his powerbook (else why whould he complain about the region code guff?) and gleefully posting APPLE EYES ONLY material that some poor foolish Apple Store employee carelessly handed him. (Side question: Does Cory care if he costs said employee his job?)
