and finally

SE asia flooded.

Ireland pledges €1 million in aid (I have no idea who comes up with the figures for this stuff)

America pledges $4 million in aid

I'm not trying to make a point here, because I'm still doing the stunned monkey impression.

update: (thx, [livejournal.com profile] canetoad) That $4m appears to be just the Red Cross' slice of a $15m package. (CNN article). Also, the rather paltry sum of €3m that the EU had initially pledged has been upped to €30m.

Actually

The United States dispatched disaster teams and prepared a $15 million aid package to the Asian countries.

And if your point is how much the U.S. government sucks, you can stop beating that particular dead-and-rotting horse any old time now.

Ah, that's more like what I was expecting. It wasn't a "USGOV SUX" thing; I was just confused by the relative proportions of the figures I could find; the $4m was the only one floating around when I posted.

$4 million was the amount that went to the Red Cross. An additional $11 million was pledged to other efforts. American relief personnel are already there.

Still, $15 million doesn't seem like much, given that we just spent $300 billion to blow the hell out of Iraq. I'm surprised I haven't seen a coordinated request for donations. I'd certainly kick in a few hundred.

It is also pretty soon after the disaster. I'm not sure all the effected countries know what they need at this point.

Irish donation

The sum of €1m seems familiar. I seem to recall the same sum being announced for a previous disaster some time ago (a hurricane in Jamaica tickles the back of my mind when I say that). Two suspicions form: (a) there is a standing permission for a senior minister to announce €1m of emergency disaster relief aid without a cabinet meeting to approve it; (b) these announcements involve recycling previous ODA figures (which happens with every announcement of gov't spending here on the emerald isle).

I keep meaning to say this, but either you and/or Cathal (on the off chance you're not Cathal) should get a lj account if only so that I can properly acknowledge and/or berate you as necessary.

"berate"? Uh-ohh. Scary stuff, that.
