in which I snark

I can't help but feel that the answer to "Why does all the cool stuff come out in Asia first?" involves a combination of "it's invented there", "it's made there", and perhaps most importantly "because they're trying to make money by creating new stuff instead of by suing over IP infringement" (of course, they may well be suing over IP infringement, but it doesn't as yet appear to be the prime money-making strategy that it is in, uh, other places)

There's an 80's science fiction story, it was printed in Analog magazine... college roommates, one American and one Japanese, invent the ebook. The American engineer struggles vainly to get his invention built in a non-idiotic form, marketing's plans for it get steadily more absurd, finally the Japanese engineer hires him away. Happy ending!
