wait, don't I know you from somewhere?

My college reunion was a bit of a bust - I had fun, but the people from my class who turned up were James, who I work with, and Sheila, who I visit several times a year. Oh, and there was a pretty incessant parade of people either noting that I was "Donal's brother", and/or asking how he was in lieu of actually having a conversation with me. Bah. Still, as I say, I had fun.

Every time I go to a high school reunion, the first thing people ask me is, "How is your brother?"

My brother was one of those people who was such a pest in high school, that people always remember him. The last reunion I went to, I finally said, "Look, my brother was a pain in the ass in high school. That's the only reason you remember him. And he didn't even graduate. He has done nothing with his life since then."

After that, one woman started relaying stories about how her own brother was a loser. It was kind of fun.

The brother in question was in Limerick the year before me, and made something of a name for himself in his extended tour through a four-year course. In particular, he was auditor of the Literary & Philosophical society during a year when the society's numbers swelled rather dramatically. In the same period, I was officially recognised by open vote as "The Auditor's Brother". The following year Donal made it to Deputy President of the Students' Union, leading to a comment in the Lit & Phil that I had been promoted. I did carve my own niche (which you may read as "caused my own trouble") but I guess being in the shadow of "The Elder Waide" was more-or-less inevitable.

It's just a little annoying having to deal with it all over again after ten years.

Ah, the families of politicans always suffer.
