I've had several women *not* in the open source movement mention the same thing, but for AD&D/LARP/game cons.

Dunno about the bowdlerization, to be honest. I do know about the contentious editing, viz. inclusions and exclusions the sole justification for which seems to be "I'm in charge, don't question my motives".
