Well, the official quote (as in, from a Manufacturer-Anointed Garage™) to replace the timing chain on my car is €900. I can only hope that that's the worst possible quote.

I thought the whole reason they put timing chains on cars (as opposed to belts) is so they wouldn't need replacing.

Everything is transitory.

Specifically, a timing chain has a useful life (I'm told) of about 200,000 miles, or less if it belongs to a bad production run, the previous owner was a boy racer, and the current owner has a tendency to do the occasional boy-racer-like take-off (modulo spinning wheels).
