Y'know, I'm all for homemade do-it-yourself amateur technology, but the device shown in that tutorial looks like shit. I have a store-bought version of the same thing sitting on my kitchen table right now. It looks good. It makes clear to anyone who walks in here that I'm not just a software geek but have useful domestic hardware talents as well. It cost like five dollars or so, maybe ten at most, and I think it was worth it, especially considering the time cost to make one's own and the wear and tear on tools for people who WILL insist on attempting to cut the wire with the wire cutters. (Duh.. that's what wire cutters are FOR, innit?)
