It amuses me that "coaster" seems to be the universally-accepted term for a failed CD burn.

Shirley that's a historical hangup from floppies? We used to call failed floppies coasters because they, well, have an uncanny physical resemblance, and because we'd use them as such once they'd failed. And, of course, they had a pretty high failure rate.

Apparently so. Failed floppies only, but we always had a stack of those ("we" being when I was living with my step-brother, so ... 90/91, maybe 92), and we'd certainly use them as coasters. And, in fact, write "coaster" on them so we knew.
