brief DVD note

LotR II extended edition absolutely rules. Especially with surround sound and a projector set up to give me an 80-inch screen on which to enjoy the spectacle.

Cool -- I'm going to try to watch that next weekend.

Hey! Is that my doorbell ringing? Who could it be?

What sort of projector? I've been thinking of getting one for exactly the reason you describe. Even the cheapie digital projectors have greater resolution than NTSC/PAL.

Couldn't tell you - it belongs to the office. I can tell you it's about $1000 worth, on this side of the Atlantic, and features (from memory)
  • 1024x768 or maybe 1280x1024 resolution on its itty bitty LCD
  • automatic adjustment for the angle you set it up at
  • ability to flip image both horizontally and vertically, for hanging the projector from the ceiling and/or back-projecting
  • s-video, composite video and monitor input feeds
  • remote control
  • buncha stuff I have no idea how to use for anything
  • zoom lens
  • manual pitch/roll adjustment via screwed-in legs (use pitch to aim at wall, use auto adjust to tweak the projected image to compensate)
  • low-power mode where the fan doesn't sound quite so much like a jet on takeoff
Aside from the fan noise - which can be considerable if you're not willing to pump up the audio on whatever you're watching - I'd consider buying one of these.
