political sniping, lack of
I note that the number of troops killed between the official "end of hostilities" and now has exceed the number killed during official hostilities. I note that George Bush is denying that the White House had anything to do with the "Mission Accomplished" banner. I note that George Tenet appears to be being set up to take the blame for the miswar, if blame is being allocated. But really, it's just getting far too surreal for me to even try and keep up with the random political commentary I've been throwing here. Besides, we've got our own political circuses going on here: the deposing of Ian Duncan Smith has just pretty much guaranteed that Labour will get another term in the UK - if that was ever in doubt; the IRA are busy making bigger fools of themselves than the DUP normally do over politics in Northern Ireland; and Bertie Ahern - our PRIME MINISTER - has suggested that publicans "stick to what they know" and serve beer instead of complaining about the impending smoking ban. In those exact words.

The Tory MPs seem to be pulling a fast one over their members, by only putting up one candidate for leader (Michael Howard, famously described as "having something of the night about him" by Ann Widdecombe in '97). As a result, they might be able to avoid the usual 3 months of internecine warfare, and get on with their normal job of attacking the gummint. It's a shame, really: Michael Howard just doesn't acronym and deacronym into anything as amusing as IDS. I have to admit that I don't like the Tories (among other things, their policies on Europe and immigration read scarily like something from the BNP), but someone needs to stick the boot into Blair...
