in which I lay off Cory for about thirty seconds

WTF?

Banks are unhelpful, period. I can say that without feeling like I'm overgeneralising. And yet, here, the customer got a name and reference number for the person they were talking to; got a clear explanation of the problem; got an agreement that yes, it's odd that it's not more public, and on the whole my reading of this is that the customer service person was more helpful than most custsrv I've ever encountered myself. In agreeing that this is a big deal the custsrv is most likely not just stepping outside the bounds of three-ring-binderdom, but more likely breaking with what information she's supposed to discuss with the customer as dictated by the bank.

And the boingboing take on it is to mock the customer service person. Well, fuck you, guys, I'm glad you're all so secure in your jobs that you don't need to worry that anything you say may be recorded and used for your dismissal. Sure, the bank's response isn't helpful, but are you seriously going to blame that on the frontline customer support people who have to pass that on to the customers?

I'm writing a post about this, but I'm really irked with boingboing right now, partly for their post on the credit card story. BTW, it was Xeni that wrote that post, not Cory.

a) You're right.

b) This is interesting, thanks for bringing it to my attention.

c) My friend [livejournal.com profile] tugrik has been monitoring related issues with ATMs here in the USA. Apparently anyone who ever used their ATM card to pay for cash at an ARCO (Atlantic Richfield Co.) gas station, which are ubiquitous here, has been pwnz0rd.

d) I also don't understand why this isn't considered newsworthy.

Yup, hence the subject of the post. You'll notice that previously I was waging a personal vendetta against Cory. Two down, two to go.

what is an ATM card?

do you mean, a credit card? or, a debit card that will withdraw money directly from your bank account?

ATM = Automated Teller Machine...

Probably a debit card to you. ATM card = card that gets money out of an ATM. Usually not shorthand for a credit card or a debit card with visa/mastercard logo on it (check card, too).

ah yeah okay, makes sense. yeah cuz i mean "ATM card" is just so all-encompassing. hehehe ...

Ah, another reason not to use Arco. Good to know.

Ah, sorry.
