laptop of doom, and a movie

Packed up the laptop on Friday and sent it in for a new screen. This would make it the fifth, no, sixth trip to the shop, and the third screen. It's not /really/ been that flaky:

trip 1: CMOS battery leaked all over the insides, causing some random damage to the modem/NIC and requiring one of the base panels to be replaced.

trip 2: I was an idiot. No, really. If you really want to know, go digging in my other online diary at waider.ie.

trip 3: screen died.

trip 4: replacement screen had fault.

trip 5: no really. the replacement screen is faulty. Here's a lengthy description of the fault, plus a GIF that shows the problem

trip 6: screen died again.

Now, the nice thing about this is that it's under a no-questions RTB guarantee until April 2003. So they collect the laptop, repair it, and send it back without charging me a penny. And given that I'm a fairly old hand at computers with no respect for any of this supposedly fragile stuff, it has withstood a remarkable amount of abuse so I'm not really concerned that it's overly breakable. If anything, it's put up with far more than I suspect the marketroids at Compaq intended. (of course, the engineers know better)

In other news, I went to see _Hardball_, a generic feelgood loser-makes-good/ghetto-kids-get-redemption sort of movie with Keanu Reeves. Here's the Hot Press review summary:

"Piss-poor. Four/Ten"

Apparently Craig Fitzsimmons didn't like it. Well, I did. Of course (a) I have a limitless capacity for schmaltz and (b) I kinda like Keanu Reeves, actually. I don't think he's quite as dumb and robotic as he's frequently made out to be; seeing some of the stuff on Matrix Revisited only confirms that opinion for me.

My Canadian roomie said she found it tiresome that people kept doing these ghetto-kid movies, and that I'd find it tiresome if people kept making redemption movies about, say, the Travelling Community (Ireland's mobile populace) or the kids in Ballymun. I don't think so, because of the aforementioned schmaltz capacity.

Jeez, I ramble on a bit, don't I?
