further adventures in disk recovery

Apparently if I don't stress the disk, I have a good chance of recovering stuff off it. The problem is that most 'normal' methods of last-gasp saving stress the disk pretty hard, by reading from it as fast as possible. I'm currently using rsync with a bandwidth restriction to copy the data off to a networked server, which has to be an unforseen use of that particular option.
